LEVI HAWKEN - Unbuffable

Nov 2017

Studio 40, Auckland, NZ

Levi Hawken is an embodiment of 1990s youth sub-culture by way of skateboarding and graffiti and has become a well-known presence and social figure over decades past. Having began his first urban contemporary career in 2007 with paintings that were graffiti lettering abstractions, Levi continues to pay homage to his graffiti beginnings with a select number of sculptures that are extensions of past paintings. Unknown to many, Levi’s natural progression into sculpting are ancestral based, having come from a line of masonry, caretaker and landscape workers. As a landscaper by day himself, his appreciation for architecture as both a skater and artist, reveals a conversation between past and present which has informed his current works in his first ever sculptural exhibition ‘Unbuffable’.
